WHO IS ARTEMIS FOWL?
A genius.
A criminal mastermind.
A millionaire.
And he is only twelve years old.
Yet as crafty as he is, Artemis may have met his match in Captain Holly Short, an elf from the LEPrecon Special Forces, when he plots to steal the richest treasure the world has ever known - the timeless treasure of the fairies!
The Fairy Race
“A lot of the magic attributed to the People is just superstition. But they do have certain powers. Healing, the mesmer, and shielding being among them. Shielding is really a misnomer. What fairies actually do is to vibrate at such a high frequency that they are never in one place long enough to be seen. Humans may notice a slight shimmer in the air if they are paying close attention - which they rarely are. And even then the shimmer is generally attributed to evaporation. Typical of Mud People to invent a complicated explanation for a simple phenomenon. ” (52-53) “Fairies had not operated in natural light for centuries. Even when hey had lived above ground, they were essentially night creatures. The sun diluted their magic like bleaching a photograph.” (124)
Designs based on insects and ground dwelling life, particularly: Dragonflie, Damselflie, Owl Moth (Borneo), Metalmark Butterfly (Caria Mantinea), Butterflies, Frog-Leg Bettles (Peninsular Malaysia), Flower Scarab (Madagascar), Jewel Beetle (Japan, Irian Jaya, Australia, Philippines, South Africa), Rainbow Stag Beetle (Australia), Pleasing Fungus Beetles (Peru), Longhorn Beetles (Thailand), UFO Beetle (Peru), Metallic Longhorn Beetle (Ecuador), Dimpled Longhorn Beetle (Chile), Blistered Ground Beetles (China)

Cupid her great-grandfather Coral Short her mother - died after humans dumped radioactive waste on a LEPmarine submarine. Her mother’s last parting words to her daughter “Holly, I spent my life saving creatures. Do not undo my work. Save them as well.” This was in reference to Holly’s vow to destroy all humans.

Her mother was a European elf with a fiery temper and willowy figure. Holly, too, had a slim frame with long tapered fingers, perfect for wrapping around a buzz baton. Lower Elements Police, the LEP
Lower Elements Police
Commonly known as the LEP, are the fairy law enforcers and army. LEP Headquarters is located in Police Plaza, Haven, Underground. Their technical genius is Foaly, the centaur. In the past they wore, “buckled shoes and knickerbockers! Honestly. No wonder leprechauns were such ridiculous figures in human folklore. Still, probably better that way. If the Mud People knew that the word ‘leprechaun’ actually originated from LEPrecon, an elite branch of the Lower Elements Police, they‘d probably take steps to stamp them out. Better to stay inconspicuous and let the humans have their stereotypes.” (33)
The LEP ransom fund has been adapted by humans as a large sack of gold carried by leprechauns at the base of a rainbow.

Originally a villain, eventually an ally of the fairy civilization.
Visual Character:
An eccentric wealthy criminal master mind who likes to wear more traditional designer clothing, tailored to fit. His lack of human contact renders his clothes a bit eccentric. He knows the physiological effects that clothing can have, so he has tailored some of his pieces to appear more intimidating [the peaked, slightly wider shoulders and the use of dark colours]. As head of the house hold, however, he mostly imitates his father, simply because he misses him and honours his role in the family. He wears his father’s Fowl insignia ring on is right hand.
“He still retained a childlike belief in magic, tempered by an adult determination to exploit it”(19) Artemis sometimes appears to be more childlike, as if an adult’s clothes were made for children. This shows he is vulnerable and still very young.
Because family is important to him, Artemis likes to wear his family’s Irish tartan. Its origins believed to come from the oldest Irish tartan, Ulster. Artemis himself has tweaked the tartan to make it appear more modern and more to his taste.
Fowl Tartan
Artemis’ cashmere Fowl tartan V-neck sweater, white dress shirt, and Fowl tartan tie. Shown without suit jacket or jacket. He also wears designer sunglasses to protect him from the fairy mesmer.

The jacket’s shoulders are tailored to peak, and are slightly wider than his own shoulder width. Artemis wears a cashmere Fowl tartan V-neck sweater, a white dress shirt, and a Fowl tartan tie. Detailed with silver buttons and his father’s cuff links.

Stakeout
Outfit worn when kidnapping Holly Short. He wears his Driza-Bone jacket fitted with a hood. Scottish sailor Emilius Le Roy discovered that torn ship sails could be recycled and made into waterproof coats by painting oil on them. This is highly effect for sailors against unrelenting seas, hence an excellent choice for a hunter stalking prey. His trousers are of similar waterproof material, except custom printed with Fowl tartan. He wears a pair of black designer hiking boots made more for comfort than for practicality. He has on night vision goggles for protection from the fairy mesmer.
Stakeout without Driza-Bone
He wears a charcoal gray turtle neck, that gives him the appearance of a stylish young child.

The 3rd deadliest man in the world - behind one of his relatives and a martial arts master who spends his days on a tropical island beating up palm trees.

The surname Butler originated in the 12th century by Theobald le Botiller FitzWalter, Lord of Preston. Lord FitzWalter accompanied King John to Ireland to help secure Norman areas.

Physical Attributes:
Massive Eurasian man
Deep blue almost black eyes

Personality:
‘Man of honour’ (244)
Extraordinarily Loyal , except when it comes to the protection of his baby sister, Juliet
Has a strong moral compass that is dampened by his professional duty as a bodyguard, loyalty and trust in Artemis Fowl II

Butler Tartan

Suit
Wears expensive deep navy cashmere wool suits, tailored to his size and to hold all his weapons and gadgetry. His suits are often made of more woolly/rougher material because of the weather in Ireland. Likes to wear a tweed cap and scarf instead of a tie. His wool scarf is made of the Butler tartan. Owns a Rolex watch. Owns a pair of leather gloves for professional purposes. Wears combat boots and long socks in case he needs to use his expertise in material arts. He carries his customary pimped Sig Sauer.

Stakeout
Outfit worn when stalking or hunting a creature, in this case the fairy, Holly Short. He wears his field Driza-Bone jacket with a peaked hood and Driza-Bone quilted vest - a brand born out of necessity. Scottish sailor Emilius Le Roy discovered that torn ship sails could be recycled and made into waterproof coats by painting oil on them. This is highly effect for sailors against unrelenting seas, hence an excellent choice for a hunter stalking pray in stormy conditions. It is lined with the Butler tartan and custom printed with a personal favourite tartan. His trousers are of similar waterproof material. He wears Farmington Steel Toe Pull-on Boots, which are perfect for being ‘forced to make three trips to the jeep in order to hump he equipment across a stile, a bog, and two fields.’ (71) He wears his night vision goggles for protection against the fairy mesmer and to see in the dark. He carries his Ivory Hunter’s Rifle. “This was no ordinary dart rifle. It had been specially tooled for a Kenyan ivory hunter, and had the range and rapid fire capacity of a Kalashnikov. Butler had picked it up for a song from a government official after the ivory poacher’s execution” (73)
Butler wears his customary tweed cap, scarf, Rolex watch, and leather gloves.

Troll Suit of Armour
“The human, Butler, was strapping on a medieval suit of armour. Incredible as it seemed, he apparently intended going toe-to-toe with the troll.” (235) Having been cured by Holly Short’s magic, Butler straps on a medieval suit of armour to successfully defeat a troll. The suit of armour is an old piece that comes from the days of the Norman crusades. Worn once by a Fowl family member or worn by an enemy of the family . It is plated with silver. In theory it should be quite simple and easy to strap on - especially seeing Butler must attack the troll before it eats his baby sister. Therefore he only puts the easier parts of the armour on leaving bottom legs free of armour. He carries a nasty jagged mace, and his customary pimped Sig Sauer.
“’Let me fill you in on the weapons status,” continued Artemis. ‘I am unarmed. But Butler here, my . . . ah . . . butler, has a Sig Sauer in his shoulder holster, two shrike throwing knives in his boots, a derringer two-shot up his sleeve, garrotte wire in his watch, and three stun grenades concealed in various pockets. Anything else, Butler?’
‘The cosh, sir.’
‘Oh, yes. A good old ball bearing cosh stuffed down his shirt.’
Nguyen brought the cup trembling to his lips.” (5)

Visual Character:
Night Gown
Angeline’s hallucinations and delusions have caused her to relive her and her husband, Artemis Fowl I’s, wedding. She remains in her dated nightgown she worn on her wedding night or during her honeymoon. The gown is now almost two sizes to big for her, due to her illness. She is however, still able to look extremely graceful. She likes to wear the jewellery she wore on her wedding day.
Wedding Dress
“His mother was seated on the chaise longue, resplendent in her own wedding dress, face clumsily coated with makeup. But that wasn’t the worst of it.”(116)
Her wedding dress is dated but very elegant and beautiful. It is covered in original vintage Irish lace. The lace is embroidered with fairies. Her ‘clumsy makeup’ shows the signs of her madness.
