THE VISIT CONCEPT

Tragicomic play by Swiss dramatist Friedrich Durrenmatt 1956. An enormously wealthy older woman returns to her former hometown with a dreadful bargain: She wants the townspeople to kill the man who got her pregnant, then jilted her. In exchange, she will provide enough money to revitalize the decrepit town. The townspeople eventually agree.

The concept: Organic vs Industrial. Claire and her entourage are bringing the cold Industry to an organic humanist environment. She also brings the town up to date from the early 1950s to the plays current time period, early 1960s.

The Town will start off in faded Organic colours such as that of stones and the forest. Their silhouette will be ragged and layered. As they make deals with Claire and lose their humanity.

The Town colours will become more like the colours of steel and Industrial machinery. The Town’s silhouette will change to a sleek and wealthy look.

Claire and her entourage will remain in steel and Industrial colours. Their silhouettes will remain sleek and wealthy.

The colour yellow will be the link between the Town and Claire as they beginning to make deals with her.

Anton Schill will become more and more decrepit as the play moves forward.

1950s Germany and modern Berlin are inspirations for the silhouettes but their is no real historical time frame for the play.
